Although it’s still nowhere close to a balanced representation, with women employing only 8% of the major roles in multinational conglomerates, the tides do seem to be turning.

  1. Take the Risk: If you feel that you’re about 70% ready for a new job or responsibility, then go for it. Men who succeed are risk takers. Women tend to wait until they’re sure, but by then the job is gone. If you at least know what you need to do to fill the 30% gap in knowledge, then you’re just as qualified as the man you’re competing with for the job.
  2. Ignore Doubt: Women love to doubt themselves, whether personally or professionally. But in order to get ahead in today’s world you have to know when to set those worries aside. If you aren’t sure of yourself, you won’t project the confidence needed to impress the boards and current CEOs.
  3. Speak Your Mind: This doesn’t mean be the squeaky wheel. This means voice your opinion as it pertains to work. You won’t know until you speak up if your solution will be the one everyone was waiting for. It’s possible that your employer hasn’t even considered you for the job you’re after, and won’t until you remind him that you’re willing to take on the challenge.
  4. Find Friends: Although women trying to climb the corporate ladder feel that everyone’s out to get them, it’s still important to forge lasting friendships. The guys call it networking, and that’s fine, but the relationships are more solid for women and favors are both received and given.
  5. Mentors: As important as good friends are for your sanity during this trying corporate climb, mentors are even more so. They’re the lifeblood of your career, teaching you not to make the same mistakes they made. They’ll help you every step of the way, with networking and the tools that you can’t even imagine you need yet.
  6. Confidence: We mentioned this a bit earlier, but it warrants its own place on the list. Without the confidence from within, you really can’t project confidence to your employers. Customers will see through you and you won’t get any breaks.
  7. Seize Opportunities: We all would love to be born with a silver spoon in our mouths but it’s just not that way in real life. You have to work for what you want, and that means snatching up every opportunity to get ahead that you can find.
  8. Build a Network: Whether at home or the office, we can’t do everything ourselves like we used to think we could. As the first child comes along, we’re exhausted.
