Hari Raya Aidiladha

Category: Ramblings

It’s coming soon. 8th Nov 2008 will be holiday for me whereby to celebrate the festive with my family. Aidiladha is also commonly known as Hari Raya Korban or Hari Raya Haji in Malaysia.

Celebrated about two months after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, on the 10th day of Zulhijjah, the 12th (last) month of the Muslim calendar, it marks the end of the haj pilgrimage period (about two weeks).

Every year, millions of Muslims make the journey to Mecca in Saudi Arabia to perform the haj, one of the five basic tenets of Islam.

Aidiladha also commemorates the sacrifices made by the Prophet Ibrahim (hence the word ‘korban,’ which means sacrifice in Arabic), who demonstrated immense faith when he was put to the test by God.

Prophet Ibrahim was commanded to offer his son Ismail up for sacrifice, and though it grieved him greatly, he made ready to perform the task. However, as he was about to strike his son, God stopped him and revealed that it was a trial. Ismail’s life was spared, and a ram was sacrificed in his place.

As such, during Aidiladha, the sacrifice of four-legged animals such as lambs, goats, cows, bulls and camels is performed.

The slaughter of the animal is done after the congregational prayer in the morning of Aidiladha.

The animals are killed in accordance with the proper religious rites and the meat is then distributed.

One third of the meat is given to the individual who made the sacrifice, while the rest is given to the poor and deserving people in the community.

Making the sacrifice (korban) is not a compulsory religious duty, but an obligations for those who are able to afford it.

The rest of the day is celebrated by visiting relatives and friends.

The “KETUPAT” for that day will be look like this : 🙂

Mysterious creature

Category: Ramblings

Last night, I’d encountered with the strangest “thing” that runs towards me with a body like COCKROACH , legs like CENTIPEDE, runs like SPIDER, face like HUGE ANT. So, I decided to shoot it with my powerful Ridsect anti-insect ahakz… and nah the result, the poor thingy had died. Poor thing!. But I have to do it to save myself. Below are the pics :

However, I’d managed to found this rare creature online by the help of CARiFORUM.com that was introduced by my colleague Salina. Below are the exact description of this mysterious insect.

Centipedes prove to be fearless predators

As fragile as it may look, this long-legged centipede is actually a dreadful and fast-moving predator of smaller invertebrates. It is itself an invertebrate, meaning that it lacks an internal jointed body skeleton, although its legs are clearly jointed. It belongs to the very large animal family of the arthropods, an enormously diverse group which also includes the crustaceans, the insects, the spiders, and … the millipedes – altogether, nearly one million named species.

Centipedes and millipedes may look alike to the uninitiated, but they are actually very different. For one, millipedes are inoffensive vegetarians. They move slowly and often forage in the decaying leaf litter of the forest floor or on decaying wood. On the other hand, centipedes are aggressive carnivores. Accordingly, centipedes can inflict a poisonous bite which can even harm humans. In fact, centipedes are stabbers which inject venom into their victims through hollow fangs, much like rattlesnakes. The venom paralyses or kills the prey. Centipedes should not be touched as they can defend themselves vigorously.

Fortunately for us, these animals are mainly nocturnal, and remain hidden by day. The main reason for this is that centipedes are fairly primitive animals, and have not evolved a proper water regulation system. They must remain in damp and dark habitats in order not to dry up completely, and emerge only at night, when the temperature drops and the relative humidity of the air increases.

Another fundamental difference between centipedes and millipedes is in the structure of their articulated body: millipedes have body segments fused in pairs, so that each apparent segment seems to bear two pairs of legs. When the millipedes move, their legs form synchronised waves. In contrast, the centipedes have only one pair of legs per segment, and they appear to walk.

Next time you see a multi-pede in the forest, look at it carefully to determine whether it is a centipede or a millipede. In any instance, you are wise not to touch it.
